“In his first solo show in the middle east, Nafir puts the essence of time into question. Starting with the showcasing of both his latest pieces and a partial retrospective of earlier works, the artist gives us his perspective on how the past and an envisioned future can meet in the present moment; but at the same time, he asks us to try and move beyond such outdated concepts.
After a lifetime of creating bridges between eastern and western art, of making the ancient traditions of Persia fuse with modern subjects and mediums, he started to understand what it means to fully immortalize a moment, taking it out of the cyclical flux of time to a higher place, one that can only be defined as “eternity”.
To further underline the temporal aspect of this exhibition, a whole section of the gallery (pointedly named “THE ROOM”) is dedicated to Nafir’s artistic progression over the span of 10+ years. To achieve this, over 300 images were printed and displayed by the artist in chronological order, so that visitors are given the chance to appreciate some of the thousands of pieces of street art that are now forever lost, as well as the great versatility of the artist in handling different materials and environments. On view in “THE ROOM” is also an original artwork, the only self-portrait ever created by the artist on carpet.”
